Shaken baby syndrome is a severe form of head trauma that can result in mental retardation, hearing and visual impairments, physical disabilities, and even death. Although there are many triggers, shaking most commonly occurs when a frustrated and exhausted caregiver loses control because they are unable to console a crying baby. All babies cry, sometimes for extended periods of time and seemingly no reason. It is normal for parents to feel overwhelmed and frustrated at times. This seminar will help parents to understand why babies cry, and will offer tips and strategies to soothe a crying baby. Stress management techniques and strategies to prevent shaken baby syndrome will also be discussed. Being aware and prepared are the keys to prevention.
